New Globex market updates – tracks COVID-19 impact on global exhibitions market

AMR International, the publisher of Globex – the global exhibitions industry’s annual assessment and forecast – has designed an index of ‘exhibition activity’, as part of its new regular market updates on the COVID-19 impact for Globex subscribers.

Many organisers and investors rely on Globex market data and forecasts for their strategic planning. However, the forecasts in the 2019 edition are no longer valid as they predate the pandemic.

Denzil Rankine, Executive Chairman of AMR International explains, “In half year 1 the industry is focussed on crisis management, and the full impact of COVID-19 is not yet visible. As we enter half year 2, the industry will need a robust set of forecasts and analyses to help with their strategic planning.

“Therefore, AMR is refreshing its data daily, tracking various reliable sources of exhibition postponements and cancellations across the world. Plus, we developed tools to analyse the impact of the pandemic on the global exhibitions market.”

Mr Rankine adds, “We have also designed an index of ‘exhibition activity’, as it’s too early to measure the precise impact of event postponements and cancellations on net square metres or organiser revenues. This will serve as a proxy for the impact on exhibition organising revenues, at least in the immediate term.”

Initial insights from AMR’s Globex market update:

  • Unsurprisingly, AMR’s early analyses demonstrate that the impact on the exhibitions industry is substantial, and much stronger than 2008-09 – the latest global crisis to have hit exhibitions globally.
  • The overall picture at the end of Q1 is that the global exhibitions industry is set to contract by at least 20% in 2020. However, this assessment will evolve more negatively as the health, regulatory and economic situations unfold.

AMR will provide Globex subscribers with regular market updates, as new data and analyses becomes available. It will feature analyses on 12 countries: China, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, UK, USA, Brazil and UAE.
